Fairy Tale Fashion at FIT

I'm so excited to write about this! I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology's Fairy Tale Fashion Exhibit and it was great!!

The ambiance was dark and a bit majestic as all the partitions in the room were dark and had the image of trees that appeared like shadows all around the room. Kudos to the curator for that.

I learned a lot about fairy tales like Snow White having a sister called Red Rose, that the original Little Mermaid ended in Ariel turning to foam and that some fairy tales are just creepy and inappropriate. Read below for details:

Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella have all been inspirations for top designers like Christian Louboutin, Nicholas Kirkwood and Noritaka Tatehana. These, and other designers, have developed full collections around fairy tales.

Some of my favorite fashion pieces are below:

Altuzarra's portrayal of Little Red Riding hood's cape with Swarovsky crystals

The Bear Prince

The Little Mermaid turns to foam

And lastly...

Noticing the fashion in fairy tales and the fashion that fairy tales inspire truly brings these magical stories to life. Turning literature into fashion is a unique way to tap into someone's imagination and truly visualize how someone experiences the tales we've all grown to love.
